News here of two exhibitions and a seminar in which Monica and her work are featured.

A solo exhibition called 'Monica Sjöö - Blessed Be' was held at Konstnärshuset, Stockholm August 24 - September 17, 2006. This was a cooperation between Konstnärshuset and the Anna Nordlander Museum. Read Maja-Lena Johannson's piece in our Tributes section. Also in Tributes Peter Tucker sends his views on the importance of Monica's work and these events

Four of Monica's works are also included in an important touring exhibition called 'Konstfeminism' (Artfeminism),a huge retrospective which focuses on Swedish feminist art from the 1960's until the present day.

The 2006 - 2007 Konstfeminism Exhibition dates are:

                          14 October - 2 April    DunkersKulturhus, Helsingborg

16 June - 27 August    Liljevalchs Konsthall, Stockholm

17 September - 13 January   Hälsninglands Museum, Hudiksvall

27 January - 15 April  Göteborgs Konstmuseum, Gothenberg

Artfeminism throws light on different feminist strategies in art from the 1970’s until today, with focus on works of art that in different ways have made, and continue to make a strong impression on the on-going discussion about genus, sexuality, the body, and human relations. During the 1970’s, radically new ideas and subject-matter invaded the art scene in Sweden. Women began to work from their own personal experience and allowed this to affect art and the climate of debate in ways that were contrary to current patriarchal values. The personal as a legitimate political area became central, as well as a strong involvement in global issues. Even existential questions played a more prominent role.

Artfeminism begins with the pioneer sprit and enormous diversity of the 1970’s. During the 1980’s, feminist strategies and their effects took other forms. Feminist and post-modern theories and analysis became important. Now, at the beginning of the 21st century, many attitudes once again relate to the spirit of the 1970’s. Today, many artists make use of a feminist perspective in their work. Concepts such as women, men, solidarity and repression are again in focus, while words such as sisterhood and gender-role have reappeared, although partly infused with new meaning.

The exhibition follows thematic trails, such as “the personal is political”. It shows how artists have approached issues such as body, gender, sexuality, masculinity, femininity, class and ethnicity. Here can also be found criticism of the media and the art market, as well as activism, sisterhood and the struggle for change.

Politics and Mythology- a seminar on the artist Monica Sjoo.
